Study Chinese
To meet diverse individual needs, Shenzhen Polytechnic University has developed a series of practical , in-depth courses, including the Chinese language courses, special training courses, economic management courses, and socio-cultural experiences based on the teaching goal of “teaching for substantial results and practical use”. Every overseas student studying here will find courses which provides suitable preparation for their new life in China.
Chinese language courses are medium-term and long-term courses arranged by semester(18 weeks) to help students acquire and improve their language skills in Chinese. The courses are designed into three different level.

Course descriptions and objectives of different levels are as follows:
Elementary Chinese Course
Teaching Objectives: Elementary courses include Chinese pronunciation, grammar, listening, speaking, reading, etc. helping students to gain command of the pronunciation of Chinese, rules governing phonetic transcription, basic Chinese grammar, basic sentence patterns, and enable students to write Chinese characters, hold everyday conversations for the purpose of basic communication, and write simple words or sentences with simple sentence patterns. The second semester will focus on students’ comprehension of basic Chinese grammar, accurate usage of the grammar and sentence syntax learnt, and improving their listening , speaking , and linguistic competence while writing simple sentences. After this stage, students should have a vocabulary of about 1,800 frequently-used words.
Comprehensive Chinese (Elementary Level I,II)

Course Description: Chinese Comprehensive Course
(Elementary Level) focuses on the practice of linguistic and communicative skills and the learning of sentences and vocabulary sets. As a comprehensive course which consists of modules on pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and Chinese characters, it aims to cultivates students’ linguistic abilities. The course offers students appropriate input & guidance on Chinese pronunciation, basic initial consonants and simple or compound vowels, modified tones, toneless phonemes, basic Chinese grammar(syntax and morphology). etc. It develops their ability to put sentences together to make an article and their ability to express ideas in extended speaking & writing . A modules on Chinese culture is also taught here to eliminate cultural obstacles and assist the students with their learning and understanding of Chinese.
Chinese Listening Course (Elementary Level I,II)
Class Hours Required: 144
Language of Instruction: Chinese and/or English
Course Description: The Course focuses on training students’ ability to distinguish different phonemes and tones: to adapt to the phoneme changes in connected speech, to demonstrate these tone changes when producing connected speech, and their ability to comprehend meaning at word and sentence level. The contextual usage of different sentence patterns is covered to enable them to understand relatively long dialogues and extended speech and to deepen their comprehension of vocabulary. Cultural background information concerning the comprehension of the listening materials will be presented.
Course Description: At the first stage, systemic knowledge about recognizing, reading and writing Chinese characters will be taught. Starting with the strokes of Chinese characters, the students will learn to write Chinese characters and gradually gain command of the stoke orders of Chinese character components, and the meanings of them. At the second stage, based on consolidating their ability to write Chinese characters, students will go a further step to improve their Chinese reading ability, learn various reading skills and methods, and cultivate their preliminary writing ability.
Language Practical Course (Elementary Level I,II)

Course Description: It is a unique primary curriculum specially designed and set up for overseas students with elementary level Chinese. Focusing on training students’ linguistic and communicative skills, the course aims at cultivating their linguistic competence through practice of pronunciation, listening, expressing ideas in Chinese and other key language competencies as stipulated by and under the guidance of the Elementary Chinese Teaching Program.
Spoken Chinese (Elementary Level I,II)
Class Hours Required: 144
Language of Instruction: Chinese and/or English
Course Description: This course mainly concerns Chinese syllables and tones, simple dialogues used in everyday life, learning and communicative activities and about 2,000 vocabulary items and speech patterns which are frequently used in daily conversations.
Intermediate Chinese Language Courses
Teaching Objectives: These courses are offered to students who have a vocabulary of 1,800 Chinese words and seek further competence. Building on their primary stage studies, this stage will lead them to further improve their ability to listen, speak, read, and write in Chinese; To enrich their Chinese vocabulary; and develop their abilities in distinguishing and using synonyms and homonyms. The courses aim to improve their Chinese reading ability, thus enabling them to understand articles written with a more complex language structure. These courses also practice their listening and speaking skills while communicating so that they can not only produce near-native simple sentences, express ideas in longer sentences but also raise their ability of expression up to intermediate level.
Comprehensive Chinese Course (Intermediate level I, II)

Course Description:The Comprehensive Chinese Course combines the teaching of spelling, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and Chinese characters, aims at cultivating students’ linguistic and communicative skills with particular focus on sentences and vocabulary. This course offers all-round training on students’ ability to listen, speak and write in Chinese based on the principle of “Language teaching oriented to communication, focused explanation and adequate practice, and combination of structure, meaning and functionality”.
Chinese Reading (Intermediate level I, II)
Class Hours Required: 72
Language of Instruction: Chinese and/or English
Course Description: This course presents students with reading material which is extensive in genre, rich in characteristic and varied in content. It guides students in reading through the appliance of various reading strategies (e.g. the strategy of predicting, choosing and inference). It also helps students speed up their reading, and improve their reading comprehension ability. By reading the material, students can gain more knowledge about hot topics concerning all aspects of modern Chinese society and life, be better acquainted with the contextual background of the language, and obtain a better understanding of the cognitive and expressive devices used by native Chinese in their writing.
Course on Business Chinese (Intermediate level I, II)
Class Hours Required: 144

Course description:This course provides an introduction to the cultural aspects of business in China, the trade and economic conditions of different areas and regions, and daily business activities from the perspectives of daily-life task and business-activity task. With the assistance of interesting, real-life case-studies, it encourages students to take up their future workplace roles and use what they have learnt to communicate confidently with the Chinese business community.
Chinese Listening and Speaking course(Intermediate level I, II)

Preparation Course for HSK(Intermediate level I, II)
Class Hours Required: 72
Language of Instruction: Chinese and/or English
Course Description: This course offers training and further explanation on the HSK examination. Students will be exposed to tasks which examine listening comprehension, grammar structure, reading comprehension, comprehensive blank filling, speaking test and other question types used in the HSK (elementary and intermediate level). It also provides students with intimate knowledge of every section and question type in the HSK and improves their ability to handle the examination questions by reviewing key vocabulary, grammar, lexical collocation and other knowledge points concerned through simulated exercises.
Advanced Chinese Language Courses
Teaching Objectives: These courses are applicable to students who have a vocabulary of 3,500 Chinese characters. Study at this stage is the developing phase after the intermediate stage. The students' listening, speaking, reading and writing ability in Chinese will be greatly improved through studying after this stage. In terms of writing, students are required to gain full understanding and awareness of the meaning and tone implied in conversations; in terms of spoken Chinese, students are required to describe and discuss issues which are logical, clear in meaning with relatively fluency; in terms of reading, students should have a full grasp of written grammatical structures and complicated sentence patterns; in terms of writing, students are required to write short passages demonstrating awareness and understanding of specific topics, a wide range of vocabulary and native usage patterns.
Comprehensive Chinese(Advanced level I, II)

Course Description:This course provides students with knowledge on Chinese written expressions, and article expression with certain length. Through this course, students will gain intimate knowledge of the usage of important parts of speech (preparations, conjunctions, and important adverbs) and some frequently-used idioms, common sayings and enigmatic folk similes and learn to distinguish synonyms and homonyms. Students will learn the written language patterns, and practice writing and self-expression in extended speaking which will further improve their Chinese ability.
Chinese Audio-visual Listening and Speaking(Advanced level I, II)

Course Description:Taking the practical communication activities of real-life social interaction as its basis, this course combines realistic materials with realistic communicative effectiveness. This course seeks to develop students' ability to obtain information accurately in a comparatively complicated setting, their ability to accurately understand Chinese idioms and common sayings, and ability to express ideas promptly and accurately and help students gain further understanding of Chinese life and culture through communication scenes and practical tasks offered by audio-visual material like documentaries, news broadcasts, plays, comedy sketches, movies, etc.
Chinese Culture(Advanced level I, II)

Course Description:This course gives an introduction to Chinese customs and traditions, Chinese language and characters, famous historical and cultural sites, arts and crafts, physical training and entertainment, literature and arts, landscapes, gardening and architecture, science and technology, history and culture, etc. providing an immersive experience of Chinese culture. Thus, activities including Chinese tea ceremony, gourmet food appreciation, appreciation of national music and Extra Curriculum Activities are provided.
Preparation Course for HSK(Intermediate level I, II)
Class Hours Required: 72

Course Description:This course offers extensive training and explanations on methods used to examine listening comprehension, grammar, reading comprehension, comprehensive blank filling, speaking and all other question types used in the HSK (Advanced Level). Course Description: This course is designed to help students gain command of written production of a range of real-world texts which will be essential for students' studying, living and working in China, e. g. job application letters, resumes, reading reports and general course papers.
Current Affairs Listening and Speaking Course(Advanced level I, II)
Class Hours Required: 72
Language of Instruction: Chinese and/or English
Course Description: This course develops students' specific listening comprehension of TV news broadcasts and enhances their ability to comprehend news from websites and newspapers. The course focuses on students promptly and accurately acquiring information from the Chinese media mainly through reading and listening.
Business Chinese(Advanced level I, II)
Class Hours Required: 144
Language of Instruction: Chinese and/or English
Course Description: This course provides students with simulated practical training in discussing business issues, analysis of business cases studies, business solution and business scenes. Based on the business subjects and the background information, the simulated practice aims at cultivating the students' listening and oral ability in realistic business scenario role plays, group discussions, classroom lectures and the final written reports.

Q1. When is the class time?
A1. Week1-18,in total 18weeks, and week18 is test week.

A3. Text or call to Martin about asking for leaving
and after Tutor agrees, go and find him for sign a written request for leave.
Q4. If I absent from the class too much times, what should I do?
A4. Give you a warning from student's tutor
If you absent from class achieve or more than 40%, we cancel the qualifications of Exam and you need to restudy it next term.

A5. From Monday to Friday, the morning class stars at 8:30 to 12:00 .The afternoon class starts at 2:00 pm to 3:35pm.
