Recently, the 100m² wall and the 1530m² cultural square at Longjie Town, Lianping County, Heyuan quietly put on a colorful coat... Those colored paintings that represent civilization, harmony, as well as positive and healthy mindsets, just like smart civilization labels, beautify the rural scenery, and also spread the new fashion of civilization. All these come from the hands of the members of our social practice team.

In active response to the “Hundred – Thousand – Ten Thousand Project” for young college students in Guangdong Province to boost the high-quality development of various counties, towns and villages, and based on the development needs of “beautiful rural culture wall paintings”, with one theme for one village, and one culture for one wall, SZPT teachers and students are active in takings such forms as cultural wall paintings and theme parties to promote the rural revitalization and construction of distinctive cultural towns at Longjie Town and build a new image of rural civilization in the new era.

Gather rapidly to highlight the “morale” of youth

At the beginning of July, after the recruitment and unified interview across the campus, SZPT selected 30 students out of more than 100 students from 15 schools to form a talented team for colored painting work of Dongpu Village Cultural Square and Council Square at Longjie Town, Lianping County, Heyuan.

At the opening ceremony, Ouyang Jin, Principal of Longjie No. 2 Middle School, gave a generous speech entitled “Hardships bring knowledge of life, and practices lead to increase of competence”, hoping that the students could achieve the goal of “receiving education, growing competence and making contribution” through this practice. Yang Pansheng, First Village Secretary of Dongpu Village, warmly welcomed the students. He wished everyone a successful completion of the practical task while showing the style of college students. The team leader Qiu Yushan, on behalf of all the team members, made a youth pact to ensure the successful completion of the task. After the opening ceremony, guided by the village director Ye Xiaohua, the students acquired a fully understanding about the natural ecology, local customs, social conditions, public opinions, history and culture of Dongpu Village, and made full preparations for the next painting session and village party.

Art empowerment torevitalize the countryside

This painting session consisted of 2 modules, i.e. the wall painting of Yuntang Villager Council Square and the scribing of Cultural Square. It coincided with the thunderstorm weather, and the local weather was uncertain. The students split into the wall painting group and the scribing group to start a race against the weather. The team members adjusted their working hours according to the weather.

The wall painting group mainly designed the painting theme for the wall of Yuntang Villager Council Square. From the theme design - shaping - stroking - filling, the students used a brush to draw out the most perfect picture in their hearts on the plain wall.

With the shaping and stroking, the outline clearly appeared on the wall, making the students full of a sense of accomplishment. Finally, colors were filled in the outline to present a wonderful and vivid picture on the wall. “At the beginning, I was overwhelmed by the white wall and worried that I would not be able to complete the task with my team. Every step, from determining the theme to putting on the wall, was a collective effort. I am glad to be involved in this activity this summer,” said Lin Minyi, head of the wall painting team.

The scribing team mainly remodeled Dongpu Village Cultural Square. The ground of the cultural square was uneven, while the square scribing needed to be carried out in a dry, clean and flat environment. The students measured the dimensions and conducted data statistics to prepare for the subsequent stroking and coloring.

As the saying goes, “A little error may lead to a large discrepancy”, the team members kept strict every step to eliminate the slightest deviation. “With such a large playground, every line and circle had to be measured and drawn by hand, which was a challenge for us. However, we succeeded in the end, and it was a joy of harvest!” Dong Shengqi, head of the scribing team, said. Finally, the team members picked up their brushes and rollers to fill in various colors according to the shapes they had drawn.

Literary and artistic works to bring “vigor” of the times for the countryside

Afterwards, the teammembers immediately put themselves into the preparations for Dongpu Village’s first “Rural Revitalization” theme party & SZPT excellent literary and artistic works to benefit people in the countryside. The activity was sponsored by the Villager Committee of Dongpu Village, Longjie Town, organized by the Youth League Committee, the Pop Music Club of the School of Materials and Environmental Engineering, and the Song & Dance Troupe of Dongpu Village, and co-organized by the support team of Longjie Town.

The staff on and behind the scenes made meticulous planning, the actors on the stage performed delicately and freely, and the audience applauded constantly. This activity brought the good programs loved by the masses to their doorways, a feast for their eyes at their, which enriched the spiritual life of the masses, and also enhanced the sense of cultural gain of the masses. “The college students are really impressive! These days, the council square wall and cultural square are changing day by day. And with tonight’s party, we don’t have to go out to see such a good performance, really great!” Xie Minghang, a villager from Dongpu Village, said to the students after the party.
