Officially inaugurated on January 1, 2019, the Economic and Social Development Research Institute of Shenzhen Polytechnic University (SZPU) is a large public research platform for economic and social science. The Institute, with 258 square meters of research and office area, has over 260 part-time researchers in and outside SZPU. There are a total of 27 secondary institutes (centers) under the Economic and Social Development Research Institute and the main research fields are industrial economy, urban management, land planning and real estate, traffic logistics, enterprise management, private economy, social management, intangible cultural heritages, teacher professional development, tourism, and comprehensive health.The Institute offers consulting services for governments based on the economic and social development in Shenzhen and the Pearl River Delta region and strives to be a high-end think tank contributing to the economic and social development of Shenzhen as well as a research platform for applied research projects in the field of economy and society in SZPU. As an incubator for the social science talents of SZPU, the Institute guides teachers to improve the level of scientific research and helps cultivate a large number of scientific research talents in economic and social science.Rooted in Shenzhen with a nationwide view, the Economic and Social Development Research Institute gives full play to the institutional strengths of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and its location adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao. It spares no efforts in promoting the construction of the "Double High-Level Plan" and a "First-class College" and to help SZPU go from being a higher vocational college to an undergraduate college. It also aims to build a highland of applied R&D and social services, contributing to the construction of a world-class vocational college with Chinese characteristics.

At the invitation of theShenzhen City Decision-making Advisory Committee, the Economic and Social Development Research Institute has joined the Shenzhen Think Tank Alliance.A batch of research institutes is gradually establishing the brand effect among Shenzhen Municipal People's Government and enterprises in Shenzhen, including the Institute of Innovative Economy, the Transport Planning Research Center, the Research Center for Collaborative Innovation of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Institute of Professional Development of Teachers, the Institute of Real Estate Economics, and the Research Center of Health Care Industry. The Institute has a number of experts, such as Deng Zhiwang, Director of the Institute of Real Estate Economics, Wang Xue, Director of the Transport Planning Research Center, and Ni Chidan, Director of the Research Center of Health Care Industry, that are all well-known in their respective research fields.
