On July 23 and 24, Yang Xinbin, secretary of the Party Committee and president of Shenzhen Polytechnic, and Wang Hui, deputy secretary of the Party Committee and secretary of the Committee for Discipline Inspection of Shenzhen Polytechnic led a dozen officials of functional departments and offices to Xiajian Village, Lishi Town, Heping County, a place where Shenzhen Polytechnic offers pairing assistance, to conduct an in-depth survey on the implementation of targeted poverty alleviation and its main achievements. They also gave guidance on epidemic containment and resumption of work and production and visited poor families.

Develop the lotus seed industry into a pillar industry in Xiajian Village

Yang Xinbin and his party first visited the Zhizhenxin cooperative and the lotus seed planting demonstration base in Heping County—the lotus seed processing workshop in Xiajian Village. He inquired in detail about the planting and income of poor families in Xiajian Village and encouraged Huang Youying, a major lotus seed grower, to specialize in lotus seed planting technology and play a leading role in working with the resident work team in Xiajian Village to develop the lotus seed industry into a pillar industry in Xiajian Village. To assist Xiajian Village in developing the lotus seed industry, Shenzhen Polytechnic donated lotus seedlings and fertilizer worth RMB 150,000 to lotus seed growers in Xiajian Village. Despite the severe attack of COVID-19 at the beginning of 2020, the resident work team in Xiajian Village led lotus seed growers to finish the planting of about 100mu(about 0.067 square kilometers) of lotus seeds as scheduled with hard efforts on reclaiming more than 30mu(0.02 square kilometers) of wasteland and two abandoned fishponds, building water conservancy facilities, and widening roads for tractor ploughing. Now, lotus seed growers have reaped a bumper harvest from the 100mulotus field, with a daily yield of seedpod of the lotus exceeding 5,000 kilograms. The lotus seed industry alone can increase the income of Xiajian Village by RMB 500,000. At present, the brand "Xiajian Lotus Seed", built by experts of Shenzhen Polytechnic, has developed into a famous brand in the City of Heyuan that has been featured in media outlets such as the Heyuan Radio and TV Station, Heyuan Daily, and Heyuan Evening News many times.

Build the Party-mass Service Center into a project in the public interest in Xiajian Village

Yang Xinbin and his party inspected the construction of the new Party-mass Service Center in Xinjian Village and provided guidance on the next step of the construction of the Center. The resident work team in Xiajian Village reported the design schemes for the Poverty Alleviation Cultural Plaza and Xiajian Village Reading Room. Yang Xinbin said that the Party-mass Service Center is very important to party member education and will serve as a bridge for the Party branch to maintain close ties with the masses and serve the masses. He asked the resident work team in Xiajian Village to accelerate the construction of the Center in cooperation with all parties. Shenzhen Polytechnic would make continuous efforts to upgrade the functions of the Center.

Education is an effective means to prevent intergenerational poverty

Yang Xinbin and his delegation visited 52 poor families in Xiajian Village and expressed their concerns by sending RMB 1,000 and edible oil for each family. In Huang Yashen's home, Yang Xinbin asked in detail about the living conditions of Huang Yashen's family and their harvest. When learning that Huang Xiuqing, the granddaughter of Huang Yashen, had achieved excellent results in the college entrance examination, Yang Xinbin said to Huang Yashen that education is an effective means to prevent intergenerational poverty, adding that his granddaughter can prove that with own efforts, the destiny can be changed, and his family will become better and better. He repeatedly told the resident work team in Xiajian Village to help Huang Xiuqing fill applications for a good college.

Yang Xinbin and his delegation were also invited to visit the exhibition of achievements in poverty alleviation in Heping County that received pairing assistance from Futian District and units directly under the municipal government. They were accompanied by He Donghui, a member of the Standing Committee of the Heping County Party Committee and leader of the resident work team of Futian District in Heping County. He Donghui made a detailed introduction to the development history of Heping County and to the results achieved in poverty alleviation in the county. In particular, he stressed the remarkable contribution made by Shenzhen Polytechnic in the battle against poverty, as well as its solid progress in reducing poverty through the promotion of education, industrial development, and the consumption of goods. On behalf of the resident work team in Heping County, he expressed his gratitude to Shenzhen Polytechnic. Yang Xinbin thanked the resident work team in Heping County for its guidance and assistance to the targeted poverty alleviation work of Shenzhen Polytechnic and said that Shenzhen Polytechnic would continuously exert intellectual advantages to contribute to the fight against poverty.
