On September 9-10, SZPT welcomed nearly 12,000 college freshmen of Grade 2023 in two batches. It is reported thatthe university has admitted 11,999 college freshmen from 20 provinces (autonomous regions) across the country this year, among whom Zhuang from Shanwei scored 562 in the college entrance examination, which is the highest score of college level in Guangdong Province this year. Zhuang already reported to the stomatology major in the School of Medical Technology and Nursing this morning.

The whole university made concerted efforts to provide guarantee for theentrance of new students

Early in the morning, Party Secretary Yang Xinbin, President Xu Jianling, Vice President Dong Chaojun, and related department heads came to the welcome site to get information in detail about the registration process for new students of each school, green entrance channel, number of students, living materials, dormitory arrangement and other work, and express gratitude to the welcome staff.

At the registration site for new students of the School of Automotive and Transportation Engineering, Yang Xinbin talked with Zhao Zuer, a new student from Jilin Province, and asked her about the means of transportation she took all the way to campus and her mood after coming to campus. Upon learning that she had taken a 40-hour hard sleeper train from Changchun to Shenzhen for registration, Yang Xinbin told her to have a good rest after the long journey. Zhao Zuer is a freshman majoring in urban rail transit operation management. It is the first time for her to travel so far away from her hometown. She made full preparations by planning and recording the route and the way of train transfer in advance. “I bought a hard sleeper on the train. I chose this mode of transportation because I like to see the scenery on the train and feel the train galloping on the railway.” Jilin Province is one of the new enrollment provinces of our university in 2023. Zhao Zuer considered herself lucky to be one of the first batch of students from Jilin Province to study at SZPT. She firmly believed that the university will keep developing better in the future, with more abundant resources in all aspects to provide a broader platform for students.

When Wu Jiajun was in the fourth grade of primary school, he was paralyzed by an accident and needed a wheelchair to get around. In spite of that, he is optimistic and cheerful. With his own efforts, he was admitted to the School of Management of Shenzhen Polytechnic University through the “3+X” certificate. Xu Jianling learned about Wu’s accommodation in detail. Considering Wu’s special situation, the school specially arranged a barrier-free dormitory for him. Xu Jianling asked the relevant persons in charge and the teachers of the school to find several warm-hearted students to take care of him in turns. At the same time, he told Wu’s parents that they could communicate with the school at any time if they had any questions or needs. “I am really touched. It is right to choose SZPT!” Wu Jiajun’s mother said excitedly. After the registration, Wu Jiajun also participated in the special activities of the school. In the New Vision sharing activity, he recommended his favorite book “The Temple of Earth and Me” to the students, planting the seeds for college life of “reading 10,000 books, traveling 10,000 miles, experiencing all kinds of things, and making good friends”.

In the first welcome after COVID-19, freshmen and their parents walked into the campus together to personally feel the style of SZPT. The beautiful campus environment, the powerful school-running display, the high-end and sophisticated practical training equipment, the clean and comfortable dormitory, and the convenient and quick living community made everyone nod and praise from time to time. It is worth noting that the welcome site this year also arranged a “mobile tea shop” for freshmen and their parents who came from afar to relieve their thirst and summer heat.

On the first day of the welcome, the campus was crowded with people, including those running “red vests”, busy school guards, enthusiastic dormitory staff, seniors carrying luggage for new students, patient and meticulous counselors, medical staff ready to provide services at any time... Today, they were a beautiful landscape in the campus. To ensure the smooth registration of new students, the Youth League Committee and secondary schools organized nearly 3,000 volunteers to perform volunteer services such as picking up passengers at the airport, taking care of luggage, and registration consulting. During the rainstorm, the Youth League Committee also prepared more than 1,000 disposable raincoats for new students. The major transportation hubs in Shenzhen, every corner of the campus, off-campus pick-up, route guidance, questions and answers...... Volunteers always appeared where freshmen needed them most, expressing their warm welcome to freshmen with enthusiasm and smiles.

“Run once at most”, welcoming new students by digital means

This year, our optimized digital welcome system also came to the aid. The university handled online pre-registration and completed the data entry of new students in advance. Before coming to campus, new students could, through the online self-service registration function, improve basic information, register online, apply for green channel, pay online, etc., and complete the self-service registration process. It was only necessary to check the student information and payment details when registering on site, and upon confirmation as no error, the whole registration process would be completed, effectively reducing the on-site flow of people and the pressure of staff. “The original process required new students to run several times, but now with the pre-registration and service integration by digital means, the students are only required to run once at most,” the relevant person in charge so introduced.

It is learned that the digital welcome system mainly includes the function of freshman information collection, visual management of registration process, and data statistics module. The function of information collection supports freshmen to enter the system to improve basic information and family profile before registration, and simplifies the process of filling in information on the day of registration; the visual management of registration process supports freshmen to check the registration information filling, green channel, department on-site registration, hukou transfer, payment and other registration procedures, and guide students to complete the registration; the data statistics module supports the university and each school to grasp the registration situation of freshmen in real time, including the real-time statistics of the number of students registered and not registered, as well as the statistical analysis of each registration procedure.

A good atmosphere at the freshmen welcome site

The welcome site for new students this year presented a good atmosphere. The words “Welcome new students of Grade 2023” as well as the youthful and energetic slogans and display boards could be seen everywhere in campus, and three-dimensional photo booths and registration maps were arranged in many places, creating a strong atmosphere of welcome. This year, SZPT also set up a dream rainbow tunnel for freshmen to read those youth messages so that they could feel the humanistic care of the university and deepen their love for home and country. “SZPT welcomes you”, “Advancing with both morality and expertise, striving for self-improvement”, “Hello, new students”, “Enrollment day”, “Future starts from SZPT” and other interesting exhibition boards attracted freshmen to stop for take photos. Each school also integrated the elements of welcome and major features, and carried on the layout and decoration of the welcome site, so that the freshmen would fall in love with the university, and feel the distinctive characteristics of their school and major in advance.

The Pioneer Society of Party Members from the School of Electronic and Communication Engineering helped welcome new students

“This is my first time to travel, but the campus is not strange at all.” At the welcome site of the School of Electronic and Communication Engineering, Wong Bingshen, a new student of Class 2 of Electronic and Information Engineering, Grade 2023, recognized the senior student Wang Chengzhu at a glance. After more than 20 days of online communication, they already became friends who talked about everything, and therefore he could master various registration procedures in advance. That was thanks to the strong support group composed of 31 senior students from the school. They contacted with freshmen in advance, and patiently answered questions, so that the registration work could be efficient and smooth.

The School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering adhered to the “Party building and welcoming new students” by setting up the Party history learning education column, designing the Party history learning education content, distributing the Party history knowledge file, and organizing the freshmen to learn the Party history. The welcome site also had an area for displaying the science and innovation achievements of students, including all kinds of military robots, infantry robots, air robots, “Challenge Cup” all-terrain rescue robots, etc., attracting a large number of new students and their parents to stop by, fully showing the high innovative vitality of the students in the school, setting a peer example for new students, and make the strongest voice for the goal of “Science and innovation first, we are ready to build a powerful China”.

Entering the welcome hall of the School of Digital Creation and Animation, freshmen would see the sign of “Drawing Life, Creative Navigation” and the cartoon character sculpture of “Adventure of Candy” created by teachers and students of the school, making them instantly feel the unique atmosphere of school culture. The “Chaoshan Family Style and Motto” exhibition site was also arranged as a parents’ rest area, so that parents of new students could enjoy the strong cultural atmosphere of the practical training space of the school while resting.

A total of 80 faculty and staff from the School of Materials and Environmental Engineering participated in the on-site welcome work in batches, and took a group photo of the first day of registration with the new students. The original background board and promotional materials designed by the student team, with a variety of light belts, created wonderful light and shadow effects. Meanwhile, the online photo broadcast directly reflected the registration site, bringing new students a surprise of the new semester, and also showing the features and creativity of the school.

At the welcome site of the School of Food and Drug, Professor Dai Jianguo and Teacher Xu Zihui, as two class advisers, warmly introduced the style and philosophy of the school to the new students and their parents. They introduced the abundant extracurricular activities and societies of the school, and encouraged the freshmen to actively participate therein and expand their interests, which made the freshmen better understand the school, and also enhanced their sense of belonging. The welcome ceremony encourages new students to integrate into the warm family of the school and write a bright future together.

The School of Education, taking the opportunity of welcoming new students, and based on the career development needs of the majors and industries, customized the “Career Task Card for 2023 Freshmen” and “Career Planning Package” for new students, so that freshmen could experience the “opening ceremony”, guiding them to be a learner and striver with “goal, path, and clear mindset”.

To help the freshmen of Grade 2023 quickly change their roles and adapt to college life, clarify their learning goals, correct their professional thoughts, understand and abide by the rules and regulations of the university, and enhance the concept of law and discipline, SZPT would take the two weeks after the registration as the “Freshman Sailing Week” to provide new student orientation, with the content focusing on General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important thoughts on youth work, university motto, discipline and regulations, and formative education, involving the grow-up, success and talent education; university motto, academic style and examination rule; “second classroom” education of social practice, lectures on quality development, cultural and sports activities, voluntary services, labor education and association activities; reading day activities with the theme of “reading 10,000 books, traveling 10,000 miles”; adapting to college life, adapting to college study and adapting to society; policy education, belief education, integrity education, civilized cultivation education, professional promotion, physical and mental health, career planning and safety education.
