From October 31 to November 2, the finals of the Digital Arts Design category in the Higher Vocational Group of the 2024 World Vocational Colleges Skills Competition were held at Tianjin Sino-German University of Applied Sciences. A total of 62 teams from vocational colleges across China competed intensely. The team from Shenzhen Polytechnic University’s School of Digital Innovation, composed of students Wu Zhanchong, Lin Jiefeng, Xu Zehai, and Zeng Xinyi, and guided by instructors Wu Qingqing and other faculty members from the Game Art Design program, won the gold medal.
This year, the National Vocational Colleges Skills Competition was upgraded to the World Vocational Colleges Skills Competition. Compared to previous years, the competition introduced significant upgrades in team participation, content, duration, and evaluation criteria. The format was expanded from single-skill operations to a combined approach of “skills demonstration + on-site presentation.” In response to the new competition format, SZPU’s coaching team quickly adapted, thoroughly studying competition documents and developing a design plan based on Tencent’s "Need for Speed" game project. Using digital avatar applications as the foundation, the team integrated techniques such as photo-based modeling, AI-driven facial expressions, AI art generation, AIpose, digital environments, and the Unreal Engine, creating a multi-role collaborative workflow with synchronized task execution. In just 45 minutes, the team completed a digital avatar operation module from scratch and proceeded to the on-site presentation stage alongside the four competitors. Their innovative approach impressed the judges and allowed them to stand out from the competition, earning the team the gold medal.
