Established in 1993, the School of Art and Design was one of the first schools set up at Shenzhen Polytechnic. The School consists of six departments, namely Environmental Art Design, Fashion Design, Product Art Design, Jewelry Craft and Design, Visual Communication Design, and Arts and Crafts Design, in addition to a basic teaching and research office, offering a total of 12 different majors. Currently, there are 1,674 students and 88 teachers, including six professors, 39 associate professors, and six doctors at the School.
The School boasts a national demonstration major (Jewelry Craft and Design), a national key major (Product Art Design), and a demonstration major in Guangdong Province (Visual Communication Design and Production), and is building Product Art Design into a first-class major of Guangdong Province. The School has twice won the First Prize of Guangdong Provincial Teaching Achievements Award, offering a number of national high-quality courses and national high-quality resource-sharing courses. In 2019, the Ministry of Education approved the construction of an industrial design teaching resource database for Product Art Design. Jewelry Craft and Design, as the first guiding unit, has presided over the formulation of the teaching standards for jewelry craft and design in higher vocational schools of the Ministry of Education. Students of the School have won over 500 awards in domestic and international competitions, including the first prize of Jewelry and Jade Appraisal in the 2019 National Vocational Students Skills Competition (Higher Vocational Group), won by students majoring in Jewelry Craft and Design.
In recent years, the School has guided its students to participate in major domestic and international competitions, winning over 200 awards, including the first prize in the National Vocational Students Skills Competition, the iF Design Award, and the Red Dot Design Award. Meanwhile, the teachers of the School have received over 200 awards for their works in exhibitions at home and abroad, of which over 100 have been collected by museums and galleries at the national level. Special exhibitions of the School faculty's and students' works were held at the Milan Design Week 2017 in Italy and the London Design Festival 2018 in the UK. A special fund has been established to support top students to go on study trips to the Milan Design Week. Besides that, the School was tasked with designing sportswear for the 26th Summer Universiade, costumes for the 19th International Botanical Congress, and porcelain for banquets at the SCO Qingdao Summit 2018, all of which were highly praised by the community.
